I totally skipped that game on BFG. The screenshots look average and plot synopsis is average too... Its game page just oozes mediocrity. I'm not surprised it's not selling...

^ I'd also like to ask whether it has spiders and moving many-legged insects?

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread 1
Hi jeanniemouse! I agree about Dance of Death. Visually disturbing, it's a very eerie game. No furry helpers in this one, R-Mom!
(I've looked and I can't find my notes on this game)
From a developer I've never heard of either, this game contains a variety of hidden object scenes, even "morphing" ones and the puzzles were very good, also. Oh, and it's not an easy game!
I didn't get wide-screen on my laptop, but that's okay, I didn't notice after awhile. No tech issues at all.
jeanniemouse, there was a comment about it on fb, about it being one of the worst games BFG has ever released. (Yay, an eye-roll emoticon)
So, if you have a spare PCC collecting dust...use it on this game! I highly recommend it, too!

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread 1
vervaine, I think there are bugs crawling all over the place.
No bells & whistles, no pretty graphics to look at, no cutesy helpers, and it's definitely not bright & cheery.
It may be old-fashioned in its gameplay, but I can do old-fashioned, as long as it's good!

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread 1
I just demo'd Dance of Death. It's not bad and definitely creepy (love the hoofed footprints!) but the problem I have with it is it's VERY sluggish on my (admittedly old) computer. I removed the system cursor of course - always a must for my system - but it's still really crawling. Not sure if I have the patience to continue with it or not.

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread 1
Okay, it's really funny that you guys should be talking about Dance of Death. I swear I was just looking at that game last night and trying to decide if I should give it a shot, but the reviews didn't seem all that positive. I remember thinking it sounded interesting though.
Guess I should go with my instincts... or just come ask you guys!
I'm still playing Bloody Mary and quite liking it. I don't remember when the overall consensus was on that one, but so far, I'm happy. It's actually kind of creepy and fun.

For what it's worth, here is my review based on the demo.
Dance Of Death
Which is best in these discussions? That I give you a simple link if I want to add my review (+ comments), or to copy the whole review to here?
Can you tell I'm a newbie to forums?

Hi JustTheFacts! I've seen your Reviews over at the other place. You have a way with words...are you a professional Reviewer?
I've always appreciated your posts in the actual game forums, also, because I hardly ever looked at the Official Reviews on the game page.

Professional reviewer - that would be the job for me alright!
Thank you for your compliments, it's all the pay I get
I do tend to treat it like a job, explaining to my cats, "Not now, mummy's working"
Over the years many people have suggested I write for a living, but I've only ever done it for fun (except for personnel policy & procedures etc - which too boring to be fun, so I got paid for them )

One of the times when you walk back into the kitchen,
- spoiler:
- the evil frying pan throws some haunted eggs in the form of a scary face.... egg yolk eyeballs anyone? in your face then it slides down the screen. I laughed my butt off!

Oh, and who exactly sends their kids to a boarding school where they have to dress like Pilgrims?

Yes, it does have spiders in abundance. Not to mention lots of other very creepy sights. But no "cute" and "helpful" creatures (fortunately in this case). You're on your own with this one...vervaine wrote:^ I'd also like to ask whether it has spiders and moving many-legged insects?

Great review JustTheFacts. The only thing I would add is that it gets better the farther you get. And no it doesn't disappoint at the end. In fact it has one twist that is so scary/funny that I had to think about it for a bit to realize what happened!JustTheFacts wrote:For what it's worth, here is my review based on the demo.

Good to know, Jeannie!
The sluggishness on my computer *is* a bit frustrating so I'll wait for a PCC, probably later this month.

I'd recommend adding the links like you did, Justie -- less work, and easy enough to go and check out!

GOG's newest promo is really good -- Pick 5 and get 80% off -- and there are some great titles in there: Amnesia 1, Primordia, Miasmata, Torchlight, Alan Wake, the Blackwell Bundle... 25 games to choose from! http://www.gog.com/high5

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread 1
Had a look at these - some look like they're really good. But I'm out of practice with adventure games - what do they mean by "tpp"?
And how can I tell what kind of fight styles they use? Like turn-based or something that I'm gonna be unable to play because I have lousy reaction times?

tpp = third person player, like in Syberia (as opposed to first person player like the Myst games).

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread 1
Thanks for the warning! I'll stay away from this one. I can't stand insects. Clean locations can be creepy too, more devs should explore that.jeanniemouse wrote:Yes, it does have spiders in abundance. Not to mention lots of other very creepy sights. Turn-based means you can take all the time you want, the enemy won't move until you end your turn (pick a move). Just watch out for ATB (Active Time Battle) systems. They look similar to turn-based on screenshots, but have sort of a timer that dictates when you (and enemy) can make a move.JustTheFacts wrote:Had a look at these - some look like they're really good. Turn-based has a ton of info on the screen, especially attack names - example
Action has less info, mainly HP/MP bars and icons for special attacks and modes - example
If you can see a grid (example) then it's a strategy RPG. They're most often turn-based.
Unfortunately I can't easily tell whether a game is ATB or simple turn-based
Thankfully GOG includes a lot of screenshots. There has to be at least one combat screen per game. Action games are labeled as action. I can't remember that many turn-based games there though...

Thank you vervaine!
I really appreciate the info. I think a bundle of 5 super cheap turn based rpgs is sure to net me something I'll like and give me a chance to reminisce about the good ole days of D&D - pre pc!!

I have a few games on that GOG sale, but I have played only non-combat point and clicks.

Me too! I recently bought some games which include some from that list:vervaine wrote:I have a few games on that GOG sale, but I have played only non-combat point and clicks.
-Stacking
-Blackwell Bundle
-Primordia
But I haven't played them yet so couldn't tell you for sure. However I don't play shooters or survival horror stuff, so take it for what it's worth.
