Honestly Genki, I'm afraid. I love DG SOOOO MUCH! If they screw it up (which is not unheard of) I will be devastated.

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread
Oh goodness, I don't know what to think about the new MCF.
That means Elephant Games will be doing it & now I'm worried.
ooohh, Fright is coming out???? Yay, I hope it's truly dark and really eerie!!!
According to their FB page, True Fear 2 will be out sometime this fall.
I agree with you, Esme. Where have all the D&E games gone? And do you know they STILL complain about them at BF.
I couldn't tell you the last time we got an eerie game. Too long, I reckon, so why are they complaining about them? Geesh.
And I'm not talking about the "dark" fairytale games (full of black-smoke villains), they're totally different from a genuine D&E game.

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread
I'm not surprised that they do, DJ. That group complains about everything.
I miss a true D&E game. You are so right about the black-smoke villains too. Give me something that is plot-driven and atmospheric, with nary a fairy or imp or sparkly whatnot!
There is a huge difference too between gruesome and eerie. I want EERIE! Let my mind me creeped out, not my eyeballs.
(Well, I seem to have woken up in quite a mood today, haven't I? Sorry! )

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread
No need to apologize, Esme, I'm the one who started it. But it is the truth.
I'm with you, I don't like gruesome either. I would like a game that sends chills down my spine, where I'm afraid to open a door and enter the scene.
We don't need gore in order to accomplish that. Atmosphere is the key word and it can be done because it's been done before.
IMO, there are a total of three games where the atmosphere and storylines have worked perfectly together to create a bona-fide D&E game. I shall name them now and remember, it's only MO.
MCF: Return to Ravenhearst - The horrifying storyline accompanied by awesome graphics & sound FX. And maybe I'm a bit biased since it was my first IHOG.
Shiver: Vanishing Hitchhiker - The morgue room. I actually hesitated when I got there & I know it's a game. What's up with that? I was scared before I even got there!
Haunted Hotel: Charles Dexter Ward - I actually read the story after playing this game and whew...scary indeed.
I'll throw in MCF: Escape From Ravenhearst just because of the psychological twists & the innovative use of mannequins in the story-telling. Very creepy! I know this game received numerous negative reviews, but I thought it was brilliantly done.
Lol, a total of 4 D&E games in the whole time I've been with BFG. That's not a lot, so why all the complaints? Sure beats me.

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread
I agree---no real D & E's. I'm going to put my 1 cent in here.
Black Smoke is waaayyy over done. Really, how many times do we have
to deal with it? Just plug in a really big fan and blow it away.
They are not LOST black monster. Its like we are dealing with red-eyed
black smoke family that when we evict them from one game, they move into
another.
The voice overs sound like there is no rush, no panic. When I hear,
for ex. , a "Oh NO" sounds to me like someone has broken
a fingernail. Or chipped their nail polish.
I like Elephant Games, but if they water down a sequel to Dire Grove---I will not be the
nice person on FB!!!
I like your mood esme---I agree with you!!
Oh, it is Haunted Halls: Eclipse that has James, "the
wonderful partner" who I want to kick.
That is why I like Dupin much better. He's more courteous and acknowledges what
I do. A gentleman, a scholar and good to look at.
Does anyone remember that hunk from a Redemption Cemetery game? He was the
sick Captain whose forehead I wanted to soothe?
I definitely have no complaints about the models they use...

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread
I am trying to think of my truly eerie game experiences.
Dire Gove is my first pick for sure. RTR is another one.I loved the first few Dark Parables games too, especially Briar Rose. I loved Vanishing Hitchhiker too.
The second or third Mystery Trackers was awesome too.
Maybe I'm just too hard to please now?

Agreed! Any "monster" you can defeat with a cannister vac is NOT scary. It's annoying. I do enough vacuuming in my real life.

No worries! I'm not even sure I played Eclipse. Though I probably did and promptly forgot about it.
The game is getting annoying actually. I am carrying around so much junk that makes no sense! Though the game does get points for me actually hanging on to useful things like the razor blade and screwdriver for most of the game. That is SUCH a pet peeve of mine!

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread
You guys are cracking me up! Oh yes, the no-emotion-whatsoever voiceover, totally lame. I do remember the hunky Captain, luvtoread!
I also think the scary things popping out at me while I'm playing is kind of overdone already, though I will admit The Others had one scene like that....and it scared me twice. I was prepared later for it, so I knew it was coming.
I'd went to have another look at Fright on YT, looks good. Then I had a peek at MCF: Dire Grove, Sacred Grove and I have to say, it's looking good, too.
ETA: Just hearing the familiar MCF music brings back the memories. I'm so glad EG decided to keep the original music.

I agree, luvtoread. Since we're comparing detectives, Dupin is in a class all by himself with his rugged good looks and newly improved speaking voice.
James is a Dupin wannabe.

Oh brother, I've got the game, Esme and believe me, I'm in no hurry to play it.
I am playing Demon Hunter and liking the gameplay very much.

It's not terrible, DJ. I just don't like games where I am a buddy to one of the characters, AND I'm not keen of Egyptology. Plus, I'm cranky today. LOL Don't let me dissuade you from enjoying the game.

No worries, Esme. I really didn't like HH: Eclipse all that much.
I have to second what luvtoread said in that I was hoping for more of a CDW frightening kind of feeling. And it never arrived.

I just am having a hard time taking it too very seriously with the whole Egyptian mummy dude running around and randomly turning into the smog monster.

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread
From you, esme, the game sounds more funny than scary! Too bad you don't
have the option of letting the mummy get James!
Well, I dl/d the demo of DG: Sacred Grove. I have to say, I do like it.
It does not have the really scary factor of DG (those frozen teenagers scared me
silly!). But I guess that is OK.
Those not so simple puzzles are back (the ones where you have to do one thing to
get another part activated).
I must admit, I get stumped but at least I know I am being challenged. I accidentally
skipped one, was upset with myself. But its a demo, so I will redeem myself when the
game comes out!
OH---I was gleefully happy (cannot believe I am saying that!) to see something morph.
These are DG collectables.
A game to look forward to.

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread
I'm so frustrated right now! DH is a big dummy!
He's created an email account somewhere & he expects me to magically know where & also know his username & password.
Is he freakin' kidding me?
I had to show him my little notebook with MY usernames. "WRITE STUFF DOWN, YOU BIG DUMMY!"
Gosh, is that so hard to do?????

LOL I swear it's the same in every family, DJ!
For Christmas this year, I found and bought a little book at Hallmark that you record all your email and password and login stuff. Gave it to my mother who can NEVER remember any of her passwords, so apparently I'm supposed to??? She loved it!

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread
Heck, I can't remember my own usernames & passwords. That's why I write them down.
Honestly, DH is not a computer user. He uses one at work, but it's for job related things. It's got its own program and is not supposed to be used for personal surfing.
He knows he CRS. Why he doesn't make note of his email info is beyond me. He's like, "Try this, try this" and I've tried everything I can think of and ain't none of it working.
I told him he should've used mine...he doesn't know it either!

I hear that! I try to keep all my stuff similar so that I'm not remembering a dozen things, but sometimes that is more difficult than it should be.
I'm sure it's got nothing to do with the whole "getting older" thing, right?

Re: Dark & Eerie Games Thread
Oh, heck no! We're not getting older...we're getting better!
Better at what, I dunno!
I finished Dream Hunter and I actually enjoyed the game more than I thought I would. I love it when that happens!
Yes, it's another "Save the World from the Forces of Evil" but the gameplay was decent. In the HO scenes, some of the highlighted items were morphing & took a little time to find. I didn't think they were too junkpile-ish and though you revisit them, IIRC, the previous items are gone.
The puzzles were fairly easy, nothing to tax the brain & I didn't have to skip any of them, yay!
Very few minor language errors, no biggie.
If I had to gripe about anything, it would be the music. When my concentration was focused on solving a puzzle or working a HO scene, I didn't notice the music. When wandering around, it was a bit repetitious.
Jump map & collectibles & bonus game included! Not bad for a SE!
I'm trying to decide what game I want to play next.
