How about something totally different?  Have you played Dream Day 7: True Love?  I really enjoyed the touching (TRUE!!) story of a couple's 70-year marriage, and the gameplay was interesting and varied, as well.

Maybe The Gift? This one deserved much more attention that it got. There are a lot of things what would NEVER happen now because of forensic science (disturbing a crime scene), but these lapses were completely forgivable because the game is set in the early 1940's.

Or how about Sprill and Ritchie: Adventures in Time? - It's quirky and fun and not the slightest bit dark or eerie - nice for a change.

Take a look at the videos for this game... pretty scary! Dark & Eerie Games Thread - Page 2 Affraid  I read that the game locations are based on the blueprints of an actual asylum! *shiver*

Genki, you reeeeally got me with this one! Holy horror, Batman  Scream .  I just had to go dig around about this, ready to try it out, but... it's not out there yet.  Seems the game is being done by a small team headed by the guy who did Scratches!  They run on a shoestring so this has been in development for like 5 years, to be released this year.  It looks pretty awesome though, & really scary.  It's point & click classic adventure play, so casual gamers will be right at home with it; no weapons, fighting... & wishing your reflexes were better (that would be me Gah! )  What it IS, from all indications & to quote the dev, is "disturbing and horrifying".  Dev is saying actual gameplay time is around 15 hours.  They've developed their own game engine, Dagon; it'll be DRM free; will be available thru several outlets, & it's already been Greenlit by Steam so will be available there on release.  So that was quite the teaser, Genki  Evil Grin .  Now we wait... & i'm seriously creeped out already.  This is gonna be a cool one, i'm excited.  -  j.

I'll have to remember to start a topic for Asylum when it finally comes out.  It may be too scary for me, though Silly face

I've been waiting on Asylum for 3-4 years now, whenever we started talking about it over at BFG. I was all for playing it upon release. Now, I think I'm too scared.
I'd read somewhere, it should play on lower-end computers. No high-dollar laptop here, so I'm glad for that.
Really though, I don't think I'll be able to play it. I'd panic too much!

Now, i have to have it (Asylum)! Not because I'm that much into scary as because I am trying to imagine anything that will be too scary for you guys!! Off to check out that video.

genki - I can't imagine liking anything that is a love story, and I have avoided all Dream Day games on purpose because the idea sounds so schmaltzy, but I'll have a look. Will see if I can trial The Gift. I know I trialled it before, but maybe at GH. Again, I didn't think much of it at the time, but am curious to see what you see in it.

re: Asylum, I got a bit of a giggle at all you D&E'ers worried about being too scared of a scary game   Shock .  Sorry, it just struck me funny Snicker , 'specially in light of having being thought of by some folks in the past as creepoid demon worshippers for liking D&E games.  But hey, i'm right there with y'all.  The clips I watched & the stuff I read really did freak me a little.  And truth: I never even got to the end of Scratches, even tho' I started it at least 6 times.  My heart would start pounding so hard in expec.......tation of something awful, I'd quit.  Maybe playing during daylight hours would help  Yeah right.  Djrum, i'm so glad I didn't know about Asylum 3 or 4 yrs ago.  I can't wait for Anything that long!  I also read that Asylum will play on any computer that would play (or even play just part of  Embarrassed ) Scratches Directors Cut, so it oughta fly for just about anyone.  JustTheFacts, you're too funny: "you lot are a bad influence on me!"  It's only fair since you'll do a great review, right.  Anyway, it's Genki's fault, hehehe.  She slid that one in to the brew, & I notice she's still rubbing her hands together with that evil grin, while everyone's wondering if they're gonna be able to get through it or not.  Genki, please do let us know if you hear of a release.  We can all hold virtual hands & give it a go Drinking buddy -  j.

    LMAO, jessmom!  Belly laugh

You have to remember there is a subdivision of the D&E club called The Fraidy Cat Club.  Big smile

For me, I don't think I could play a survival horror game. I wanted to play Amnesia: The Dark Descent so bad. I even had the actual game in my hands & I put it back on the shelf.

I'm hoping Asylum is done more along the lines of Scratches: The Director's Cut. The suspenseful build-up of the story & using your imagination to freak out.
With Amnesia, I don't wanna flee from scary monsters and have no weapons & hear myself breathe all the time.

Djrum, now that you mention it, I do recall references to The Fraidy Cat Club subdivision LOL.  Umm, if your laughter is any indication, maybe I
qualify for membership?   Laugh  I'm with you, I definitely don't want to be trying to find an exit outta the Asylum with a bunch of zombies coming after me, but it doesn't sound like weapons are needed, & imagination will be the biggest thing to overcome... which obviously I didn't do well in Scratches.  Re survival horror games -that's something I watch someone else play on youtube.  Well, I've never done a group play before - Genki, would you be kind enuf to give me a little tutorial on how that works please?  If it means there's someone besides me virtually exploring that house in Scratches, i'd give it a try again.  A fresh approach might get me to actually finish the game, tho' it may be worthwhile to invest in some bottled courage with an alcohol base as well, I'm not sure.  Oh geez, that place gave me the creeps  Sweat drop . Yet i'm feeling it calling...  EEK!

RM, I've PM'd kac over at DBP to let her know I'm going to set up the Vampyre Story group play thread here probably late Friday the 24th.

jessmom, I've only done one group play myself, but here're the basics:

A group of people agree to start a same game at the same time, and one of the people sets up a thread for us to discuss the game in  -- for Vampyre Story, that would be me.

As we're playing the game, we'll periodically pop into the group play thread to talk about the game, our feelings about it, etc.  If we need help with something, it's a great resource!  So that we don't ruin the plot for anyone who's not gotten as far as we have, we post those kinds of things in spoiler tags.  So something like this:

    Spoiler:

or you could do something like this:

I'm stuck in the basement and
    Spoiler:
(Yes, making these up as I go along Snicker  )

would be in spoilers, because it would ruin the surprise for others if they hadn't seen that happen yet.

Those spoilers you see above look like this when you type it out:
[ spoiler]Gah!  I nearly had a heart attack when that clown popped up on the screen[ /spoiler]
just remove the spaces in the spoiler "tags" for it to work properly.  I recommend using the Preview function (to the left of the send button) the first time to make sure you typed it out right.

The first post of a group play thread explains how to do it so that anyone can join at any time -- even if they come across the thread months after the game has been finished by others!

And if you're interested in doing a Scratches playthrough this weekend, I'll set up a thread Friday!

Yes, jessmom, I am a big fraidy cat when playing some games. On console, too!! (I still haven't finished Fatal Frame 3)
Honestly, I don't even know why I like the D&E games so much, but I do!

Scratches was awesome! I freaked myself out really bad on that one & by the time I got to the end, I couldn't take it anymore. I definitely needed a light on to play.
And notes...I had pages & pages of them. I also drew a map in order to navigate around the house because I couldn't remember the location of all the rooms & jotted down the different things that needed to be done in those rooms.
It was well worth playing and I think it's one of the scariest games, ever.

I'm looking forward to when I first dip my little pinkie toe back into adventure waters, but I don't think I'm quite ready for Scratches yet!! Anyway, I want to get through these damn HOPAs of mine, with a review for each of them, cuz it is getting harder and harder to remember them.

Amaranthine Voyage eg. I know I LOVED  We\'re Unworthy! Wub that game so much! But I have no idea why!! Stars  And I played that relatively recently - less than a year ago - twice! I even reviewed it, and I know it was my first EIPIX game, that I was very impressed with the originality. And that's it! Oh well, me and EIPIX have come a long way since then. Now I would never not buy one of their games. Was it really only just last year that they exploded onto my world? So many games since then! Hope they don't burn out.

Sorry, gang, bit off topic there... Zip it

    lol, JustTheFacts!  Laugh

My problem is...I get them all mixed up! Put that with the "CRS" and I'm usually lost on what game it was. Maybe if I see the pic, it might jog my memory just a little bit.
The games I rate "phenomenal" stay, I don't forget them.

For me, with LFAs, it's patience & perseverance and I seem to be lacking both right now. Heck, it took me almost a week to finish MCF: Fate's Carnival. And I was using the hint button on those darn puzzle locks!
I've got 2 LFAs in my Purchase History I haven't played yet.

LFAs? Sorry, what are they? Large File Adventures?

Yes, I am very much of the same opinion regarding Madame Fate. I usually play a game in one sitting, even the lengthier ones, but I had to keep stopping because it was making me so tired. And those puzzle boards killed me! I think I skipped all but one. Even trying to work out what to do from the SG was exhausting!

I've got all 5 Dracula games to do. They are the first ones I'll get into, plus another Dracula that is the precursor to Love Kills, a HOPA with same characters etc. I've owned that for about 18mths and never got past the second scene! EEK!

Laugh There IS no off-topic in this thread!

LFA = Large File Adventure.  In other words, a true adventure, and not the casual adventure-lites like Dreamscapes and Witch's Prison (both of which I LOVE Heart  , by the way)

Oh, I'm sorry, JustTheFacts. Yes, it is Large File Adventures.

Oh my gosh, when you say the precursor to "Dracula: Love Kills," you're talking about "Dracula: Origin" and that was one hard-ass game (I'm being blunt, here).
Dracula: Origin was so good! Why the second one was developed as a HOPA, I have no idea. (I know it was a subdivision of the original company that made it)
While Love Kills was okay, Origin blows it away! (just MO, of course!)  Big smile

The other Dracula game, I keep getting them mixed up. BFG had the original, all in one piece. Then it was sold as a broken-up trilogy or something like that.
I've always wanted to play the first one, in its original form, before the break-up. I even went and looked at it on Amazon.
I think it was Pathway of the Dragon, I'd have to go look as I'm horrible with titles!

I loved Love Kills - it was funny. Loved having to decide whether to drink the blood of the enemies we defeated. Loved Drac and Igor and Van Helsing all working together - what a crack up! Belly laugh
