Hate to go on, but... I got a kitten.
After Fiver died, I felt I had to tell my neighbour who I like and respect a lot, but who didn't like Fiver coming into her yard, scaring her pet birds.
Anyway, 2 days later she came down and said she knew it couldn't replace Fiver, but her friend had a Ragdoll kitten! Only my all-time favourite breed until I heard about Bengals. They are medium haired fluffy and have been bred so that their inclination is to just flop into your lap, over your shoulder, anywhere they can. They're a VERY cuddly breed. So, I um'd and ah'd, and finally said I would take her for a trial, cause my cats are all so territorial and jealous.
Well, so far, all we've had is a lot of hissing and growling and a couple of swipes (without claws) and now Tobie (the Bengal, she is about the size of his head, honestly) let her eat her fill of his food (this is the one who is dieting!) before he ate the rest! Mind you, just so she knew who was boss, he growled and hissed the whole time lol.
Schizi and Jackie the really jealous ones have gone nose to nose with her (cat equivalent of shaking hands) and they've not been impressed, so they hissed at her too. Ninja won't even go into the room if the kitten is there!!
All of which is actually a pretty good start, though it doesn't sound like it. These cats are not your average cat who would normally adjust after a couple of days, but this is better than I expect.
Can you tell I haven't talked to anyone about her yet
