    So I think all of you who post here already know that I'm moving because the landlord is selling this place.  We've been living here for 13 years, and I don't know what's common/legal to ask on a rental agreement.

    Do I really need to give out my checking account number? Huh?  I understand that they want to make sure that I have the money to pay them with, but... Sweat drop

    My Social Security number?  Needed to verify that I am who I say I am, I'm guessing.

    It makes me nervous giving out this info, but it's necessary to get a place to live... right?

    We are not necessarily going to be the same, seeing I'm in Oz, but yeah, we have to give out the equivalent info with a rental application.

    I thought your social security number was protected from that now.  I'd double check that.  I don't know why they need your checking account number either.  They do credit checks and you can provide creditor's info for payment records.  I am probably totally wrong on all of that but it just doesn't seem right.  Have you found a place to move to?

    We found a place, and I'm filling out the application now.  There are others interested in the place, so there's no guarantee that we'll get it.

    EDIT:  I Googled the info, and it is necessary to have the SS# in order to do the mandatory background check. *sigh*  I understand, but I hate giving out that info!

    It's been a long time since I moved, but I believe in UK, you would need to give your National Insurance number, and 2 or 3 forms of identification - a bill with your printed address, driver's licence, birth certificate, bank card etc.   Smile

    I hope you get the rental.

    I wouldn't worry about giving out your checking account number as they'll get that quick enough when you turn in your deposit. 

    As far as why they might want it -- so they know your bank account when you skip out on the lease, they sue you and garnish your bank for the judgment.

    Unfortunately many places do require all that info - and I hate it too - but try not to worry about it since it's pretty standard procedure. Best of luck and keeping fingers and toes crossed that it all works out your way.  Hug

    Its nerve wracking enough just to move without worrying about the rental information requirements too..
    I think it is standard, here in Canada, too...

    Good luck on the move, genki, and I hope you get the place you want.  Don't forget to get a "change of address" form from the Post Office, so they can forward your mail to you.  When I asked for one many moons ago, they had some other information that was helpful in moving, such as time periods in which to do things.  Hope they have that for you.

    Think of the move as a wonderful opportunity to jettison all that stuff you keep saying you're going to dump or contribute to charity, that always helps.

    Hi there.   genki--yes,  unfortunately you do have to give that info  (are you going through
    a Real Estate agent for rental?  They will definitely ask for that info).

    It is to protect  them.    My landlords  are in the process of painting and fixing up downstairs
    apartment and taking the last renters to court.   She skipped out on the last 2 months and
    moved out in the middle of the night.
    I know there can also be bad landlords out there.   I have been fortunate that I have gotten
    along with my landlords  (lived in one place over 20 years!!).

    Soon,  this will be over with.....(I know,   not soon enough Tantrum )

    Thanks, all!  I appreciate your help (and your support!)

    We got denied for the house because we had a bankruptcy in the past due to medical expenses... even though we've NEVER missed a single rent payment (or even been late for one!)  Obviously not meant to be.  We'll keep looking.

    Sable, we'll be having a HUGE garage sale (hopefully) next weekend, and everything that doesn't sell will go to charity.  In the meantime, I've donated at least 20 bags full of stuff to Friends of Felines already!

    There were a lot of pluses for the place, but there were several negative, as well... not the least of which is that we would have needed to move in two weeks.  Even though there's NO WAY we can be ready that soon, we would have killed ourselves trying, so in that respect it's really just as well.

    We have faith that the right place will show up when it's time.  It's just a matter of waiting right now Smile
