The series was released as "Juvenile Fiction", and while I haven't re-read the series in many years, I have enjoyed them every time I picked them up to read.
You may recognize the title, The Black Cauldron, as an animated movie title. While Disney did base their version upon this series, the movie terrible compared to the books! I would say that it's loosely-based, at best!
If you enjoy fantasy, I definitely recommend giving The Chronicles of Prydain a try - you may be pleasantly surprised by the intricacies of the Mr. Alexander's very solid storytelling
