Encyclopedia: Magic
Magic is a force existing in the world of Valkemare. This force can be used to accomplish a wide variety of tasks. Some uses of magic may be feats not otherwise possible—such as conjuring a flame out of thin air—while others may simply be an easier way to get things done.
The energy to power all forms of magic comes from a substance called mana. This liquid provides the energy that is utilized when casting a spell (or otherwise using magic).
Mana can be found naturally in pools, springs, or as solid crystals. Mana in this “raw” form is very potent, but must be refined before it can be used by humans (dragons, on the other hand, are generally able to make use of raw mana as-is).

Elements

There also exist specialized forms of magic that are closely aligned with certain elements found in nature. Many creatures (dragons included) can be said to have an affiliation with one or more elements.
To power such magics, there are elemental varieties of mana. A given mana source (e.g. a spring) will usually only contain one specific element; raw mana of differing elements does not mix well.

Uses of magic

Spells are the willful use of magic by sentient creatures. This is how humans interact with magic: expressions of the caster’s will. It is believed that it is possible to devise a spell to accomplish any feat, so long as there is enough mana and dedication to power it.
Certain beings may have innate connections to magic. That is, they can utilize magic in some innate, primitive form, despite lacking the ability to cast spells. Often, this results from exposure to raw mana; many naturally-found pools are surrounded with plants and animals that have been mutated in such a way.

As you walk through the forest, you come across a small cave filled with dragons of all ages. You see no other humans around, so you assume that this must be a group of wild dragons. Luckily, they do not seem to notice your presence.

Actions
At each stage of growth, there are several actions that may be performed on an egg, hatchling, or dragon. To access a creature’s actions, click on “Dragons” from the top menu, then click on the link labeled “Actions” next to the creature you want to perform an action on.

Abandon

Can be performed on: Eggs, unnamed hatchlings
Abandoning an egg or hatchling will cause it to be sent to the abandoned area, where others can pick it up. This action is not always successful; hatchlings may choose not to stay by the cave and may follow you back.

Breed

Can be performed on: Most breeds of adults
Usage Limitations: Can be used once per week per pair of dragons.
Breeding allows you to obtain more eggs. When you breed a dragon, you will be presented with a list of eligable dragons of the opposite gender. Upon choosing a partner, you will be presented with the results of the breeding attempt. There can be several outcomes:

• “The dragons refuse to even go near each other.”—This pairing of dragons is incompatible and will never breed successfully.
  
• “The dragons don’t really show much interest in each other.”—The dragons are compatible, but are not a very good pairing. Note that there is a “spectrum” of compatibility; most pairings will occasionally show no interest, but it might occur more frequently for some pairs than others.
  
• “You attempt to breed the two dragons, but no egg is produced.”—The breeding was not successful. You should try again after seven days.
  
• “The two dragons breed to produce an egg.”—Success!
  
• “The two dragons breed to produce several eggs.”—Breeding may sometimes produce up to four eggs, but you are only allowed to keep one from each batch. The other eggs that you decide not to keep will be abandoned automatically.
  

Describe

Can be performed on: Frozen hatchlings, adults.
This action enables you to customize your dragons with a personal description. Descriptions must adhere to the description guidelines and must be approved by a site moderator before they can be seen by others. If your dragon’s description is approved, it will appear at the bottom of its info page.

Freeze

Can be performed on: Unfrozen hatchlings.
Usage Limitations: Can be performed 10 times per 2 weeks.
The Freeze action allows you to prevent a hatchling from becoming an adult. A frozen hatchling will cease to accumulate views, unique views, and clicks.

Hide

Can be performed on: Eggs, unfrozen hatchlings.
Hiding an egg or hatchling will prevent others from viewing it and thus prevent it from accumulating views, unique views, and clicks. The only action available to hidden eggs and hatchlings is “unhide.” Eggs and hatchlings may still die while hidden.

Kill

Can be performed on: Living eggs, hatchlings, and adults.
Usage Limitations: Can be performed 5 times every two weeks.
Killing an egg, hatchling, or adult will cause it to die and eventually be removed from your scroll. This action is not always successful and hatchlings or adults may resist your attempts to kill them.

Name

Can be performed on: Hatchlings, adults.
Naming a hatchling or dragon is one of the ways through which you can personalize your dragons. Each name is unique; no two dragons can have the same name. Names are non permanent; once named, a dragon’s name can be changed or removed. Names can only contain letters, numbers, spaces, apostrophes, and dashes.

Release

Can be performed on: Frozen hatchlings, adults.
Releasing a hatchling or dragon removes it from your scroll without killing it. Dragons that have been released have no owner and cannot be picked up by another user; released dragons become "wild" and can be seen in the wilderness. *
