The Beginning Of An Impressive Series

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
When I first signed up with Big Fish, I was totally wowed. I’d never seen anything like it. But since its release (2009), we have seen some breathtaking improvements in the standard of games in all aspects.

This original game is a complete HOG. There is no travelling under your own steam. And there are no locations outside HO scenes.

SIGHTS & SOUNDS
The graphics are poor by today’s standard, but in 2009? I think they were something special at the time. It looks and feels very much like the better games in this series. But they are sometimes too dark, and sometimes just too grainy, for searching the scene for evidence. The few cut scenes have become a signature for this series. There are no voiceovers, but there is that signature music, eerie and fun together.

WHAT’S HAPPENING
Edgar Allen Poe’s ghost (and his assistant raven) visits you in your office. He wants you to find out who his true killers were. He gives us a magical time travelling watch that allows to us travel to the real life place and times of the murders that he fictionalized. Otherwise, he cannot pass on. So you travel through the locations and events in search of evidence. You visit 2 of Poe’s novels, solving crimes, and then also investigate his life and times.

One feature I really love in this series – the hint button will display a silhouette for any object in the lists, no penalty. I also love collecting ravens in order to gain extra hints.

MAKING PROGRESS
The way to collect the necessary evidence, you must search amongst HOP scenes. Occasionally you get a puzzle. The game moves you to each new scene, where you will search for up to 20 items, with one or two interactive items listed in a separate list. Your reward will be the info you write up in the notebook, and the item you will need in the next scene. There are only a very few puzzles, and they are not very hard.

FAMOUS LAST WORDS
This is a series I absolutely adore, so I was quite surprised to realise that this first one has poor graphics and no adventure component. I still got hooked playing it again! This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship with me and “Midnight Mysteries”.

I Recommend This Game!

Who is in love with C. Auguste Dupin from the Dark Tales series? He is a character in this game as well , and the same is true of the story. There are several referred to in this game.

I'd call this one an IHOG-lite, as there are some adventure aspects to it.  My sis had some troubles figuring out what to do (she's a straight-HOG type of gal   )

This is one of the games that brought me into the world of casual gaming.  I was absolutely in love with it, and played it through more than once.  My eldest has played it through at least five times!

It was the same for me, genki. It was the midnight series were, along with the Dark Tales, what finally made me join the club.

And I've played all except the last one of this series, several times each. I have officially got 352 games, so I am banking on me being sensible with the future games at a rate of 1 per day.

I didn't think there was enough questy stuff to make it an adventure. In fact, I don't remember it (it was my 'daily' game today)

Excuse the grammar and typos. I meant to say I'm hoping to get through them all without spending too much money, because I have just the right amount to ration out one game every day.
