Big Fish's explanation for why they've chopped Syberia 1 up into three parts:

    Hi fishies,

Recently, the developers of Syberia decided to create a three-part version of the original game and release these parts seperately. While the story remains the same, this new format allows us to bring this fantastic adventure to a brand new audience.

For some of the fishies in the pond, downloading large file games can be difficult and time consuming. The developer’s decision to break the game into pieces means more manageable downloads and has allowed us to include a free trial for each part.

Anyone who purchased Syberia prior to this re-release will still be able to access the game in its original format from the Purchase History page of their account.

We are working on releasing the other 2 parts as soon as possible.

    Thank you and happy gaming!

I understand their "reason" but actually I think they did it because they had a contract with the developer or current owner. At the time I purchased Syberia2 from BFG I recall that this new formatting was already underway. I had read about it at Gamezebo or some such site. I seem to recall that the first part was being tested or was being offered to a small audience. So this 3 part thing has been underway for a while and BFG had some sort of contract for the game then.

I believe that this was a first for BFG. They were offering the two original games that had been successful sellers on CD in the retail market. I already had purchased Part 1 at a local retailer some time earlier and was happy to buy Part 2 from BFG. I do think it is a big dirty though to offer it yet again in 3 parts and call it "New", posting it as the TGT and then the Daily game. I still think this should be a soft release (all 4 new parts).

I purchased my set of 1 and 2 from Amazon at a good price, probably under $10. If they can sell the CDs that cheap, there is no reason to split the game up in 3 parts for $6.99 each. Just a way to make more money.
