Naperville's 'Jeopardy!' record-breaker wins 13th in a row, approaches $1 million in winnings ... James Holzhauer

Thirteen was lucky for Naperville native James Holzhauer, who Monday inched closer to winning $1 million on “Jeopardy!”

Once again Holzhauer dominated on the quiz show, winning $90,812 and bringing his 13-day total to $942,738.

In Final Jeopardy, Holzhauer provided the correct response “Who is Elgin?” to the clue: “In a poem Lord Byron, a lover of Greece, calls this diplomat & fellow lord a ‘plunderer.’”

He started the round with $52,126 and added $38,686 on his wager giving him $90,812 at the end of the show. He also gave a shout-out to friends “Zach Emma & Lilly” in Monday’s Final Jeopardy response, noting that he ran out of family members to acknowledge.

Monday’s win ties the 34-year-old professional sports bettor from Las Vegas with Matt Jackson for fourth place in the list of consecutive “Jeopardy!” games won.

Ken Jennings holds the record for the longest winning streak at 74 consecutive games in 2004, winning $2.5 million over that run.

A win Tuesday could push Holzhauer past $1 million in total earnings.

Holzhauer already is a frontrunner in single-day winnings. With Monday’s showing, the Naperville North graduation owns the top six spots on the leader board for the most money won in a single show.

Holzhauer still has a ways to go before topping the all-time winnings, including tournaments. That record is held by Brad Rutter, who won nearly $4.7 million. Jennings is second with about $3.4 million, when tournament winnings are included.
