Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration includes the base game and Season Pass featuring all-new content. Explore Croft Manor in the new “Blood Ties” story, then defend it against a zombie invasion in “Lara’s Nightmare”. Survive extreme conditions with a friend in the new online Co-Op Endurance mode, and brave the new “Extreme Survivor” difficulty. Also features an outfit and weapon inspired by Tomb Raider III, and 5 classic Lara skins. Existing DLC will challenge you to explore a new tomb that houses an ancient terror in Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, and combat waves of infected predators in Cold Darkness Awakened.

    KEY FEATURES:

    • Lara’s Journey – Lara uncovers an ancient mystery that places her in the cross-hairs of a ruthless organization known as Trinity. As she races to find the secret before Trinity, the trail leads to a myth about the Lost City of Kitezh. Lara knows she must reach the Lost City and its hidden secrets before Trinity. With that, she sets out for Siberia on her first Tomb Raiding expedition.
    • Woman vs. Wild – In “Rise of the Tomb Raider,” Lara battles with not only enemies from around the world, but the world itself. Hunt animals to craft weapons and scavenge for rare resources in densely populated ecosystems. You’ll encounter beautifully hostile environments, full of treacherous conditions and unstable landscapes that will require Lara to push her limits to the very edge.
    • Guerilla Combat - Use the environment to your advantage, scale trees and dive underwater to avoid or takedown enemies, configure Lara’s gear, weapons, and ammo to suit your play style from stealth to guns blazing, craft explosives on the fly to sow chaos, and wield Lara’s signature combat bows and climbing axe.
    • Return to Tomb Raiding – Tombs are back, and they’re bigger and better than ever. In “Rise of the Tomb Raider” you’ll explore huge, awe-inspiring ancient spaces littered with deadly traps, solve dramatic environmental puzzles, and decipher ancient texts to reveal crypts as you take on a world filled with secrets to discover.

Rise of the Tomb Raider (Action-adventure)

I'm sure that I purchased the Standard Edition of the game, but I definitely have the Season Pass content, so keep that in mind as you read.

My Tomb Raider (2013) Review outlines most of the elements of this beautiful sequel.  If you've not yet played TR2013, stop reading this right now and go play it!  Not only will you learn the basics of gameplay, but you'll be playing an awesome game!  If you loved this first one, you're sure to love this one, too!

There are four modes of play:  Adventurer (Easy), Tomb Raider (Normal), Seasoned Raider (Hard), and Survivor (Nightmare), each clearly marked as to what the differences are.  I chose the Easy mode for my first play-through, as I wanted to concentrate on exploration and discovery (and I really needed the aiming-assistance whilst using the controller), but some of the battles were way too easy, so I switched back to Normal mode once I completed the story and went looking for my 100%. Elk grin

Gameplay is almost the same, but it seems that the devs listened to players' feedback RE: the first installment, as they've streamlined the experience a bit.  Such as:

    • More campfires scattered throughout the levels, and you can fast-travel between any and all until you hit the "Point of No Return".
    • You can now save ANYWHERE!  There are two manual-save slots for you, in addition to the auto-saves.
    • Lara learned a few things from her previous adventure, and knows to keep certain survival items with her at all times... Things like glow sticks for hunting in dark places and her handy hatchets.
    • Alternate outfits are no longer just for show, each one having its own bonus, such as more pockets for ammo or hunting bonuses.
    • More incentive to be a completionist!  Coins are used to purchase some otherwise-unobtainable upgrades.
    • Custom waypoints.  Whaaat?  Was this available in the last game, 'cause if it was, I totally missed it!  Set a marker on your map, and see a blue symbol pointing out the way to go when you use Survival Instincts.

Clicking to loot/pick things up was a bit fiddly for me at times, but otherwise I had no technical problems at all.  Lara looks a lot different to me, and while she is more realistic-looking, I think that she's also less distinctive.  I'm a huge fan of the 2013 game, so I am of course biased towards that character design.

The story seems to be a reimagined version of a well-known Indie movie, so nothing fresh and new there, but I liked it nonetheless.  We're absolutely set up for plenty of sequels, which makes this fan very happy indeed. Happy bounce

Overall, Rise of the Tomb Raider feels very much like visiting an old friend: Familiar, but never boring.  I have no doubt that anyone who was a fan of the 2013 game will love this continuation of Lara's early adventures.

And now, my friends, I'm off to hunt down the last 6% of the collectibles, because genkicoll-the-completionist must have her 100%! :D
