May I vent for a moment? Empty May I vent for a moment?

Post by snapnhiss Sun Aug 24, 2014 2:13 pm

    Apologies ahead of time.

Am I the only one that thinks this is insulting to the people that bought and liked a game?  Is this kind of verbiage necessary to review a game?

I won't be buying any more "helper" games. They have become redundant, silly, insulting to the intelligence, nauseating, and characteristic of inferior, cookie cutter games. Enough is enough. These games, it seems to me, are aimed at children.
Come on, BF and devs, we are adults looking for decent entertainment, not diversionary eye candy aimed at little ones.

Sorry, but these trends the devs have run crazy with involving:

    1) precious, cute animal helpers is getting absolutely insulting. May I vent for a moment? Sick It's pandering to the "aw, shucks" in all of us, and regrettably and unfortunately ---- to the players of a certain age that loves BF.
    2) And, even more unfortunately, the games are getting disgustingly simple ---- like this one. My 10 year old grandson walked away from it, and said it was for "babies", and I won't support this or any other game this utterly simple. Come on, devs, give us credit for a little bit of intelligence.

In addition to being a trend, as you politely call it, I believe it is an obnoxious type of pandering. Especially when they show us "cutesy" animals that we can "dress-up" or "improve their habitat". That sort of thing makes me think the devs are laughing down their sleeve at us. I can hear them now ---- "Hey, let's put in a cute little critter right here. We can't come up with a story, but these middle-aged so called gamers will love these critters". Sorry, but that's what I believe. And it's insulting ---- not to mention childish. As a middle-aged gamer myself, I am definitely not looking for cute and simple. Oh, once in while, sure, but game after game?
(And then I see some of the replies in the forums ---- almost always female, btw ---- simply gushing about the "adorable" or "precious" animals. May I vent for a moment? Sick )

I have to agree that this game is super simple with an aim toward very young children, or someone who likes pink or purple.

Those are snippets from four different games, four different developers, all insinuating that only children would enjoy playing them.  I'm 56 and I don't appreciate being told that my taste runs toward the 6 year old age range.

I'm curious why I'm getting attacked by quite a few BFG forum members when I protest.  He can review to his heart's content but how about *NOT* insulting others while doing so?  I'm not sure why I can't get that suggestion across without his admirers swarming me.  Am I being too sensitive and his reviews really ARE funny?   Huh?

    Dear snaphiss -

I stopped playing where the piranhas are running (ruining) the fish tank now .... with their nasty little entourages yapping and sniping at personal opinions that DARE to differ with the main .....

still buy the games and now REALLY enjoy them ....

as the only opinion that I have is mine.

Since you're a dragon fan, I'm assuming you've read the Pern novels.  Love, LOVE Pern.  I want to move there and shack up with a bronze rider.

Anyway!  Rumor has it they're finally going to make a movie, possibly an entire franchise.  I guess with the success of Game of Thrones, this kind of story is hot right now.  And best yet, we have the special effect ability to make the dragons look fantastic.  Yippee!

ETA:  I should start a new thread so we can dream cast our favorite characters.  I can't wait to see Moreta, she's my favorite.

Whee, more Pern fans~!  Lookie, a Pern thread!
Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern Series

I had the list in post #1 all updated at one time, but Todd keeps writing new books, and I've fallen behind! Laugh

There was a Dragonriders movie in the works at one time, but Anne was so unhappy with how they proposed doing it that she nixed the project... if I'm remembering correctly!  I could be mixing up my authors (maybe that was actually David Eddings... Hmm Hmm...  )  Well, either way, if it's true, I'm definitely going to have to see it!  Y'all feel free to start a topic about it; either in The Reading Room or in the Movies & Music area, whichever you prefer Big smile

And yes, I won't tolerate nastiness here.  I want this to be a place for people to come and relax and have fun... and vent when needed!

Wow, those 4 posts are harsh.

I believe a point can be made without hurting other people's feelings.

I've often stated that I'm tired of the cute animal helpers. But I would never insult somebody else just because they like them.
I've said that I think ERS games are too easy anymore. That's my opinion on their games. It doesn't mean I don't buy them...I refuse to buy the CEs.
I certainly don't expect everyone to share the same opinion as me.

And when I see reviews like that, I have a tendency to skim over them. I've looked for Justie's reviews, but I know she's busy being a Dragon keeper.
So, I'll read what's posted & proceed to demo. I can usually tell if I like a game (or not) in the first 10 minutes of playing. Ah, well...sometimes I'll use the entire demo time & still can't make up my mind.
Then, I'll wait for the SE & demo again. If a fantastic sale comes along, that might make my decision a bit easier.
I wait for the weekend sales anyways or a Developer sale. Sometimes, Wednesday's sales are okay.

There are pages and pages of "reviews" like that, I don't understand why more people haven't called him out on it.  I saw a few but the usual supporters (groupies) showed up to defend him.  I just don't get it.

Sadly, this is all too common around there and one of the many reasons that when I was there I rarely left the D&E thread... and now that it's gone, so am I and I honestly haven't looked back since. I enjoy coming here and since I frequently have very different takes on the games, I sort of just buy what I want and don't buy what I don't want.

snapnhiss, "He" (I think I know who you're referring to) is most likely a member of the so-called nonexistent clique that does exist over there.
You can't go up against them...you'll always lose.

As Esme said, we stayed in our own little D&E thread that jeanniemouse created, peacefully discussing games or whatever topic we chose (following the rules, of course).
    No drama whatsoever.

I still go to BF everyday and check out the TGT, read reviews, and tech troubles. I rarely go back after the first day of reviews unless I'm worried about the tech issues. That's when I hit the reviews again.

Since I'm not there, I don't read a lot of reviews. I did read where people were complaining about pink/purple colors and the use of portals in games.
Hey, I'm happy if the game has a good storyline & no tech issues. I don't really care what colors are used or if portals are prominent, I'm very easy to please.
Truthfully, I'm a HUGE fan of the dark & dreary, grungy graphics.

I very rarely go over to the forums,  but out of sheer curiosity I went over and checked out
    the new Puppetshow forum.

Holy    Cow-moo , Batman!   First, I must admit,  all those  Removed By Moderator posts makes
me think everyone has a potty mouth.    dirtywords

Then,   there is always one person bent out of shape because of what someone else said,
that,  put in perspective,   really is not a big deal.    Instead of asking that person what
they meant,   they go into a snit.

I also had to laugh at some who said that the Puppet Show series should have stopped
    ages ago.       So true.

Someone.. Whistle ... here said the same thing,   and now we have a  Cow-moo        Thank You

All because the poster asked:  "Didn't this have a different name?"    Laugh

As for the colors,  that is one of the reasons I find the Puppet Show so tiresome.
Same colors,   same head with leg puppet running around.   Someone blast him
and get it out of our misery.

I remember the first time someone did not like what I said.    It was about
a woman's weight in a certain game--she was an opera singer.
I made some comment about men being clueless about their looks.

One thought it was funny,     some guy commenter did not and took me to
task.     Like I cared.   Mouse pbbt

I didn't use any naughty words and some of my "removed by moderator" posts weren't insulting or aimed at anyone.  In one of them I said something like "so even though I don't like arcade games, it's acceptable and even encouraged to post negative reviews there.  I'll keep that in mind."

I really don't get the point of "reviewing" a game that you know you're going to hate and posting the exact same comments that are insulting to the developer AND other members.  People are certainly free to trial in hopes that something's changed but it's clear by this point that he's wallowing in his own anger and disgust and won't ever enjoy an ERS game.  In fact, he hates probably 95% of the games he trials no matter who the dev is.  I honestly fail to see any humor in his comments, he just comes across as a cranky old fart that hates life.
