Firefly the Series & Serenity the Movie Empty Firefly the Series & Serenity the Movie

Post by genkicoll Fri Dec 30, 2011 2:40 pm

For those not familiar with Firefly the series, it was aired some years back on Fox, but the network killed the series by not airing the pilot episode until three months after the series started! >_< No one understood what was going on, so the series died very quickly *cry* The series ended quickly, but there were several unaired (and brilliant!) episodes that never aired that came with the box set, which is WELL worth the money!! (and I'm a tightwad!)

The basic premise of Firefly a sci-fi western. Earth's two biggest superpowers, America and China, have merged, so everyone, no matter their education level, speaks both English and Chinese. This is very handy for the TV series, as all cursing is done in Chinese! lol~ All Chinese is spoken in a context that makes it obvious what is meant, whether they're cursing or speaking terms of endearment, so it's easy to understand what's going on (during the brief moments when they're not speaking English).

It's many years in the future, and mankind has outgrown the Earth. They've gone on to new worlds, terraforming planets and moons to make them habitable, and dropping settlers on the various planets where they live or die. The central planets form The Alliance, but the "less enlightened" planets on the outer edges have differing points of view. The war with the "Browncoats" was devastating to both sides, with the final battle being fought, and won by The Alliance in the battle of Serenity, which is both the name of the movie, and the name of the main character's ship.

Our main cast, from left to right:
Firefly the Series & Serenity the Movie Fireflybanner

Jayne, Kaylee, Shepard Book, Simon, Inara, Mal, Zoe, Wash and River

Jayne Cobb is our cutthroat mercenary. He's rude, crude and socially unacceptable, and money and guns are his main focus in life. Despite this, he has a good heart buried in there, which will occasionally show itself forcefully.

Kaylee Frye is our sweet, lovable and earthy ship's mechanic. She has a love of machinery, as well as for the ship's doctor, Simon.

Shepard Book is a preacher, caught up in a world he didn't expect when he signed on as a passenger on Serenity. He discovers the brutal reality of life outside the abbey, but he may just be exactly where he belongs.

Simon Tam is the ship's doctor. A brilliant student with a promising future, he threw it all away to save his little sister, River, from the clutches of the Alliance, who was holding her captive and conducting tortuous experiments on her.

Inara Serra is a companion. In the future, being a companion is a very respected and prestigious profession. By companion, you can figure out the connotations of what a companion does. The schooling starts at the age of eight so that the women can become the finest ladies in the 'verse, skilled in everything from tea ceremony to sword fighting - they can do it all... besides keeping others company.

Malcom Reynolds aka "Mal" is the captain of the ship, as well as a former volunteer sergeant for the Browncoats. Serenity is his life and his home. He and his crew scrape a living by doing jobs for others, both legit and illegal. He hates everything about the alliance, so the illegal jobs don't bother him a bit. He's an honorable man with a twist. :P Has a volatile relationship with the ship's companion, Inara, as - though they can't admit it, even to themselves - they have deep feelings for each other. Not the least of his problems with Inara is his healthy disrespect for her profession.

Zoe Washburn is second in command on the ship, as well as in the war. A warrior woman, her loyalty to Mal is unswerving and unquestioning. This occasionally causes problems in her marriage.

Hoban Washburn aka Wash is the ship's incredibly talented pilot. Married to Zoe, theirs is a true portrait of contrasts, as he is a light-hearted joker - nothing "warrior" about his man. Usually wears Hawaiian shirts and loves to play with plastic dinosaurs, this man will keep you smiling.

River Tam is Simon's sister, and co-fugitive. I mentioned that Simon is brilliant, but River makes her brother "look like an idiot child" (direct quote from Simon, by the way). Intuitive, graceful, incredibly talented and even more intelligent, she was taken by The Alliance, for she is also a psychic. The experiments they conducted on her has left her mind fragmented, and her behavior erratic. The love between this brother and sister pair is touching, and sometimes painful to watch.

The characters are beautifully cast, and the rapport between them is palpable. If you get the chance, watch this series from beginning to end - in the order which it was meant to be seen. It's funny, quirky, dramatic and at times touching. I highly, highly recommend it! I love LOST, but for me it's something that has to be taken in small doses. Firefly I will watch over and over again, and still want more!

Why-oh-why did they cut this wonderful show?! I'm reading quotes and the humor is just so deadpan at times, so incredibly well-written! I miss it so much!

Book: [to Mal] If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.
    (later...)
Mal: Oh, I'm gonna go to the special hell.
    (and even later...)
Mal: [about Saffron] You would've kissed her too.
    Zoë: Wash didn't.
Mal: But she was naked and all... articulate!

and gotta love Patience, what a character!

Mal: Did you send word to Patience?
Wash: Ain't heard back yet? Didn't she shoot you one time?
    Mal: Everybody's makin' a fuss.
    (later...)
Mal (matter-of-factly, about Patience): I believe that woman's plannin' to shoot me again.

Looking back at it now, the words may not seem that funny - it's the delivery! The actors are just SO good!

Oh, if you're a Firefly fan, you must check out this story at NotAlwaysRight    Firefly the Series & Serenity the Movie 597951271

    Don’t Mess With A Browncoat

Retail | Edinburgh, Scotland, UK | Awesome Customers, Geeks Rule, Top

(I work in a movie/TV memorabilia store. Most of the stock is sci-fi related. A boy approaches my station.)

    Boy:
“Excuse me, you sell stuff like Klingon to English dictionaries, right?”

    Me:
“We surely do. There’s two in stock at the moment.”

    Boy:
“Okay, so then do you have a dictionary for Firefly to English? I’m like, obsessed with it… I’d like to know what the people are saying when they speak the space language, so I can say I know everything!”

    Me:
“Oh, it’s not actually a made-up language. They’re speaking Chinese.”

    Customer:
“Eh? They are not. It’s a space language. It’s set way in the future and everyone lives in space. Have you never seen it?”

    Me:
“I have indeed. I’m a big fan. I assure you they speak Chinese.”

(The boy looks surprised and then laughs loudly at me.)

    Boy:
“You’re a lassie. Isn’t Firefly more for guys? There’s loads of fighting and stuff. You can’t know that much about it. Why the h*** would space-folk speak Chinese, then?”

(I pull my keys from my pocket, from which dangles my Serenity spaceship key-ring.)

    Me:
“I also own the DVD box-set, the graphic novels, cast posters, 2 t-shirts and several other bits and pieces. I’ve even met Jewel Staite. The characters speak Chinese sometimes because after the war, America and China were the only remaining large power countries, who came together to form The Alliance. The culture-fusion resulted in a mixture of both English and Chinese being the commonly spoken tongues.”

    Boy:
“You just made that up. You don’t even know. I know far more than you. Who’s Jewel Staite supposed to be, then?”

    Me:
“She’s the actress who plays Kaylee!”

(A second customer in line who has been listening with interest suddenly pipes up.)

    Customer #2:
“I thought you knew everything about the show? Quit being such a tool and let me pay for my stuff already.”

    Boy:
“But I just want a Firefly dictionary! This stupid cow won’t help me!”

    Customer #2:
“You’ll find a Chinese to English dictionary in any big bookshop. Now if you’ll leave the poor lassie alone, you gorram a**, that’d be shiny!”

(I can’t help but laugh and the boy flips us both off, then storms out, kicking a display as he goes. I smile at the second customer.)

    Me:
“Thanks for that, mate. Always nice to get back-up from a fellow fan.”

    Customer #2:
“No problem. That boy was a total sha gua.”

(I gave the customer a free Firefly keyring like mine for that. Note: ‘sha gua’ is Chinese for ‘fool’.)

Loved this series. I was heartbroken when it was yanked off the air. Recently some TV channel (Fox?) aired most of the shows, but in the wrong order, of course. Luckily I was fortunate to find out the correct order, so I had a Serenity fest for a few days.

And I love how references to Firefly are made by Nathan Fillion in the TV show Castle, crack me up.

Firefly is also frequently mentioned on Big Bang Theory! That's the reason why I originally started watching BBT! haha

    Me:
*to the girl* “So, what’s your name?”

    Girl:
    “River!”

    Me:
“Oh, what a pretty name! I have one, no, two favorite TV characters named River!”

    (Her father raises his eyebrows.)

    Dad:
    “Which two?”

    Me:
“Oh, River Tam from Firefly and River Song from Doctor Who.”

(The father laughs and points at his daughter.)

    Dad:
“That’s who she was named after, River Tam.”

(At this point, I’ve finished the little girl’s face paint, which has glitter in it. She is admiring herself in my mirror.)
