    About That Soap You're Using...

Post by genkicoll on Sun Jan 19, 2014 4:19 pm

For years my boss (a doctor) has been telling us antibacterial soap is not safe.  On Friday, he walked into our office and said, "Anyone in here using antibacterial soap?" to which I raised my hand.

    "Stop immediately."

    "Oh...kay.  Sure.  Why?"

"It can cause cancer.  The FDA has told the companies that they have a year to prove that the benefits outweigh the risks.  They're finally cracking down."

(conversation paraphrased a bit Wink  )

Tiny excerpt from an article at mercurynews.com:
The proposal challenges claims by antibacterial soap makers about the effectiveness of their products, and aims to limit the use of the chemical triclosan, which has been linked to changes in hormone levels and increased risk of cancer, and is a common ingredient in most soaps and anti-bacterial hand gels.

Thanks for the heads up, Genki. Triclosan, eh? I use all natural Vermont-made soaps at home but we're probably drowning in triclosan at work (a nursery school). I shall have to check and make or suggest substitutions.
