Post by pippi Fri Jul 04, 2014 6:21 am

I wrote a couple game reviews recently, and since somebody said she enjoyed my ramblings, I have been sufficiently encouraged to write more.  (The compliment really made my day -  Happy bounce !  But I can honestly say  da blame to DJ.)

Now that I know how to do the super-duper high tech method of copying and pasting posts to other places  Embarrassed  , I'll even cross-post them to their actual game thread.   Snicker

    Defender's Quest

available at GOG and probably other places

At first, I ignored this game for two important reasons:
    1.  Tower Defense sounds boring.  I don't like boring.
    2.  The Good Ol' Reviewers at Good Ol' Games mentioned that the Developer included some nasty "I'm watching you" auto-uploading of gaming metrics.  For those of us who do NOT like to be watched, that was bad, bad, bad.

    BUT!!!
The developer came to GOG, listened to criticisms and basically built a new game.  Say What?!?  Talk about listening to your customers!  During GOG's Summer Sale, I grabbed this little gem for the crazy price of $2.49.  It is worth ten times this.  Seriously.  I mean that and I am a cheapskate.  (I see the need for a cheapskate gif, Genki, and no, we can't just use a picture of me.)

So what is this game?  It is Tower Defense, RPG style.  Basic Premise - you're a Royal Librarian who suddenly has the ability to control fighters to stop an evil plague and the dude causing it.  Because of your special power, you get stuck in this "in-between" world - and YOU are the Tower the little fighters are defending.  (Talk about incentive for success!  I do not like dying!)  As you progress through the levels, more of the story is revealed.

Now, for serious Tower Defense players, there will be a LOT of level grinding so you can develop Uber Powerful Defenders.  However, the Devs thought of this and made each level have 4 difficulties so you don't have to play the exact same level overandoverandoverandover again.   Wub  BUT for those who just want to focus on the RPG aspects, there is a casual mode.  Again, I say  Heart  these developers!  Also, in true RPG fashion, you get a Leveling Tree to level up each individual defender (not just each class of defender).

Other cool RPG features:  You can name each of your characters and change their hair, eye, clothes / armor colors - which actually has more of a purpose than playing virtual dress-up.  If you go the customised warrior route (that is individualising each character's leveling tree), you can differentiate each little tower defender on the battle screen!  Whoo!  Another classic RPG bone - you can win unique weapons and armor.  Sweet.

The casual modes are designed to be pretty basic and easy.  I've read that a casual playthrough takes roughly 5 hours.  I will spend about 100 hours playing.  The normal level is easily do-able, but requires a bit of strategy.  The advanced mode gets downright difficult, and the extreme level, is well, extreme.  (Extreme is synonymous with "Holy Cow I'm Gonna Say Bad Words They Are Slaughtering Me" and "Are You Kidding Me This Is Impossible", right?)

The story is interesting and the dialogue (done comic book style, no voices) is downright hilarious.  Reading it is enjoyable - sometimes even  Belly laugh .   It's so nice when a game doesn't take itself seriously - and pokes fun at itself successfully.

What I like most about this game - it makes Tower Defense FUN.  I'm learning so much about proper strategy, and I am not getting the least bit bored.  The Devs included achievements - some are even new additions based on what their forum regulars were doing in the game  OH! .  There are also some mods available (but I haven't downloaded any).  The music is bland enough to be appropriate background noise, but I surprised myself by missing it when I turned it off, so I would say that the music definitely adds to the game.

This game won't appeal to everyone - I wouldn't consider it a "casual game" - but at the same time, it IS a casual take on what is typically "serious gamer's genre".

If you read, you'll know why I wanted THIS forum to know ...:

    All in all, it's definitely

Happy bounce  Happy bounce  Happy bounce  Happy bounce  Happy bounce
    so I recommend this game!

P.S.  They're working on a sequel!   Two thumbs up

Good job, pippi!! Although I don't play Tower Defense games (as a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever even tried one because they do sound boring!), your Review makes it sound fun to play.  Big smile

It is, DJ, it is ... I recommend checking it out if GOG puts it on sale like that again - because the casual mode requires Zero tower defense experience and the story is really a lot of fun.

Awesome, Pippi! Sunny  I've been needing to make a topic for this one for a while, so thanks for the excuse Elk grin   Defender's Quest (RPG/Tower Defense hybrid)  I put it in the RPG section so that it doesn't get buried in the "Other" section, but I'll put a link in both indexes.

EDIT:  Oh, and  Miser  <-- You'll find this in the Misc section of the smilies!

    Dark Dimensions Series

Thanks to the enablers friends on this forum, I discovered a new game series.  Based on the demos, I think the games get significantly easier as the series progresses.  That is always annoying.  I really like the series, and have it in my BOGO cart.  BUT.  I am having technical difficulty with two of the four games.  That is disappointing.  The fourth one was especially horrid.

I'll probably get them anyway, tentatively stick a toe in the BF forum* to check for similar technical issues, do a clean install upon purchase ... and if that doesn't fix things, moan and groan to BF customer service.    Whistle

(*this is an obscure pun to reference the fact the forum used to be the Pond, and folks will stick a toe in water to test temperature before swimming.   Rolling Eyes )

The concept of these games is really brilliant.  We'll see what I think after playing all of them!!!

Yes, I think the first DD was the most difficult.

    Who? Us? Enablers?  Laugh

While some may think of us as game hoarders, I prefer Game Collectors. Sounds more official.  Okay

HA!  I'm just thankful Justie, Orphaned, Frodo and Riddick haven't "enabled" me some dragons.   Big smile

And OOOH - I like "Game Collectors" - it does sound official - and way less whacked than hoarder.   Elk grin

The Dragon game sounds time demanding & complicated to me.

Way back when, I had one of those Tamagachi (sp?) keyrings. Poor things, none of them ever made it to adulthood because I kept forgetting about them.

Not sure what it is other than AWESOME!

PvZ is one of the few games that I replay and like just as much as the first time. I love, love, love that game. I actually have it on my Kindle too and will play a few levels before bed.

    I'm addicted.  Happy bounce

I was playing 4 Pics 1 Word on my Kindle until it stopped at 1073. Apparently, I'm not the only one with this particular problem. My sister & her boyfriend play on their cell phones & are in the 2000's.
I think it's something to do with Amazon.

Now, I'm playing "7 Little Words".

I could never get even a little way in PvZ. No good at all at anything time pressures. Just can't move my mind fast enough and get frustrated with the strategy. So. No good at tower defence games either!

I had 8 credits.  I used all of them during the BOGO.  (I don't think I've been creditless in years!)

    We now own:
    Dark Dimensions: Fog
    DD: Wax
    DD: Ash
    DD: Song
    MCF:  shadow lake
DP:  Jack and the Sky Kingdom
    ... ... ...
and the 2 stray souls games.  YOU ALL  da blame  so when I am terrified and run screaming from that Killer Clown (we should add esme's .gif to our collection), you all have to hug me and tell me it will be all right.   Snicker

I LOVE evil clowns!! They are so creepy! And the one in Stray Souls is brilliant. But what I don't understand is, first, how does one develop an evil clown phobia? What is it about the poor clowns that is so scary anyway?

Why isn't, say, an evil butcher, the ultimate creepizoid?

Oops! I have only played the game, once, a couple of years ago. And I've not seen the movie/play whatever it was. So he slipped my mind.

But you don't have multiple stories based on the idea of him, even though, let's admit, it is a pretty bloody scary equation Butcher+Evil= eek! Knives, meat hooks, freezers, blood and, the kicker, "guts" I hate guts  La la la!

If no one cares, I'm going to ask a question that might derail this conversation. (Like I've never done that before)

Sweeney Todd... the game was fun. Sweeney Todd the Tim Burton/ Johnny Depp movie.... I didn't even bother with it.

Is it just me, or is anyone else sick to death of the unrepentant and repetitive pairing of Burton & Depp? Especially with the added Helena B. C. element?

    Dark Shadows
    Sweeney Todd
    Corpse Bride
    Sleepy Hollow
    Alice in Wonderland
    ad nauseum....

I will be the first to admit that I loved Edward Scissorhands... but holy cow... lately these collaborations feel like the same old same old same old....

But, it's probably just me.  Embarrassed

Because clowns are supposed to make kids happy and laugh (that's not the origin of clowns, but it is the modern version).  Anyway, when you take something that is supposed to be fun and safe for kids and then make it a source of terror (Pennywise, I'm lookin' at YOU!) it creeps kids out.  Then we're scarred for life.

Evil butchers, on the other hand, are supposed to be creepy and chop you up while you sleep.  So no surprise there.

     Smile

esme - I don't think I could ever be sick of Johnny Depp.  Or Tim Burton.  I agree, however, that in your list of movies, there were some I hoped would be better than they actually were.  Perhaps Edward Scissorhands just set the bar too high.
